For the preserving fool, this book is a great find! There's very inventive combinations and a lot of the recipes come with four or five "variations." For instance, there's a basic peach jam recipe with ideas for cardamom, sweet basil, bourbon, and chipotle variations.

As far as the inventive recipes go, there's so many. The ones that struck me most were the combinations of "Strawberry-Cranberry Jam" (with dried cranberries), "Tart Cherry-Coffee Preserves," "Apricot-Almond Spread" (with almond paste), "Curry-Coconut Apple Butter," "Orange and Fennel Marmalade," "Confetti Preserves" (with shredded carrots, zucchini and yellow squash), "Tandoori Tomato Jam" (with garam masala).... Besides these, there's a whole section of "Our Best Blends."

I actually bought this book for the Happy Hour section. I actually made most of these for holiday gifts. You can check out those recipes here.

Even for the beginner, this book would be valuable. The first 17 pages are full of safety tips and directions.

Jams & Jellies is my new favorite canning book!!!! (That's saying a lot!)

More innovated than I would have expected from BH&G. Contains lots of standard favorites, but quite a few interesting variations. Tart Cherry-Coffee Preserves, Peach Sriracha Jam, Balsamic Basil Plum Jam, Hot Thai Sweet Potato & Pumpkin Butter, and Curry Coconut Apple Butter are all on my list for this summer. Plus there's a chapter for Happy Hour Specials that are all based on cocktails. ZOMBIE MARMALADE! More innovated than I would have expected from BH&G. Great recipes that are doable for small batches. That's what I wanted so I could give them as gifts. I cut some of the recipes in half and that worked great. This is a solid book about canning jams, jellies, and spreads. I really like the introduction pages where they explain what kitchen tools/equipment you'll need, info about jars, tips for processing fruit and veggies for canning, and the difference between types of spreads (what is jelly, jam, compote, etc.). Then it jumps into the recipes. There were a few I'd like to try and lots of good gift ideas! As with any book of canning recipes, I would HIGHLY recommend taking an in-person canning class This is a solid book about canning jams, jellies, and spreads.
